SPEEDREAD
by
Jerry Goff
COMMODORE MICROCOMPUTERS MAGAZINE
September/October, 1986
According to Jerry Goff, there are
almost 12,000 different periodicals
and about 42,000 books published every
year. No matter what your profession
or favorite pastime is, one thing's
for certain-- you have some reading to
catch up on!
SPEEDREADER is designed to increase
both your reading speed and
comprehension. One section uses the
"flashcard" technique to build your
reading speed and improve your
concentration.
We have supplied you with levels 1
through 4 to experiment with the
flashcard option. When prompted to
enter the level, enter 1-4. To
change these files or add levels 5
through 8, select the "Flash Create"
option at the start of the program.
When you run the "flashcards"
option, you will see two solid lines
at the center of the screen. Try to
be relaxed, then focus your eyes
between the two lines. When you press
RETURN, a word, phrase, or number will
appear between the two lines. Your
job is to type what was displayed.
If your answer is correct, the
program will increment a counter at
the top of the screen. When you have
answered correctly 15 times in a row,
the speed will increase. At the end
of 45 correct responses (three sets of
15), you will go to a more difficult
level, i.e., one with longer phrases.
Now the hard part... If you make a
mistake in any of the groups of 15,
you have to begin that set again.
If you lose your concentration,
however, you can see the word that was
displayed by entering "r" for
"repeat"-- but don't use this option
too much or you will only cheat
yourself. If you want to quit, enter
a slash ("/") at any time.
SPEEDREAD's second option, the
"stopwatch", simply lets you gauge
your reading speed. Just click the
option on when you begin reading, off
when you're finished. When you enter
the number words you read, it will
calculate your "words-per-minute".
One final note-- practicing reading
now and then won't help you. From the
outset, you need to set aside a
definite time to work with this pro-
gram. Goff maintains that 30 minutes
a day should yield good results.
